Tonight's show features clips from the documentary 'Planet Rock: Hip Hop and the Crack Generation'. The film that is narrated by Ice-T illustrates the effects that this one drug had on urban inhabitants and in turn hip hop music. It can be easily asserted that the explosion of crack led to the in-your-face storytelling of NWA, Snoop, Kool G Rap, Wu-Tang, and other 'gangsta' rappers.
Playlist includes C. Mayfield, PSA's by Clint Eastwood and PeeWee Herman, as well as getting high anthems and songs reflecting on the ill effects of substance abuse.

Independent labels have a mystical appeal to hip hop heads. They appear to be the sanctuary for those tired of mainstream radio rap. Could it be that the future of music involves seeing an increase the number of independent labels? Well, that already seems to be the case with many business savvy artists releasing material on their own self started label. Tonight's show features more convo as well as cuts from early to late 1990s hip hop labels: Rawkus, Wild Pitch, Loud, Stones Throw, Duck Down, Hieroglyphics Imperium.

INVENTING HIP HOP: Hip Hop Record Labels 1980s The Future of music is an interesting topic that I am exploring in a series of shows. Each show will focus on different aspects of the recording industry while at the same time breaking you off with some quality cuts. Tonight we take it back to the first days of digital music on the compact disc. It can be argued that their rush to put out music on CDs has created a music community that shares digital files illegally and also the up and up. More convo on the show...
Featured Labels: Def Jam, Profile, Cold Chillin', Sugarhill, Tommy Boy.

J5 2.1 The New West
Tonight's show features artists from California, representing a new sound in hip hop for the West Coast. I grew up on Snoop, Dre, Pac, NWA, Mac Mall, JT, E-40, and other artists that professed a gangster mentality in at least one or two songs. Although, I knew I would never engage in that lifestyle I still happily sung along to their verses. That music is fun because it is a guilty pleasure of rapping about fantasy world that no one actually wants to see come to fruition. What the West Coast needs is for artists to make it past level 1 of the game and mature to broader topics other than rapping about their block or their hood. How is your reality related to mine and other people not living in your situation? Tonight, most of these artists represent a fresh air of topics and most importantly style of flow. Richie Cunning from SF brings clever word play. WordUp from the Deep East brings a good flow. Kreayshawn from the O brings creativity. Kendrick Lamar from Compton brings expert lyricism. Hopie Spits from the Bay brings educated and mature female hip hop. Other artists to check out: Fashawn, Kero One, DaVinci, Frank Ocean (singer).

J5 1.19 : TUPAC TURNS 40
What does the life and music of Tupac Shakur mean to you? Here in the bay, we like to 'claim 'Pac as a source of pride'. As a member of the dance troupe for Oakland's Digital Underground, he built up his show credentials, but it was probably his home life that gave him the more influential experiences to draw from. His music was filled with passionately delivered lyrics and poetic stanzas. His charisma made his story more interesting, but it was his songs that kept me listening. Although many of my most often played Tupac songs are the expletive filled odes to the thug life, I prefer the softer tones of 'Me Against The World', 'Temptations', and 'So Many Tears'. Tupac will mean something different to each listener, but all I hope is that you listen....
